Dr Noor Zakhura is the Provincial Clinical Manager of XDR and MDR TB in the Free State at the Department of Health. When Dr Zakhura started treating MDR-TB patients in 2003 in the Free State, there were only 17. In 2013, he had treated over 700 MDR-TB patients over that period of 10 years and he had now diagnosed over 857 MDR-TB patients since. He is currently appointed to provide clinical advice for Mental Health within the DoH.

He completed his MMBs at the Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India in 1992. Afterwards, Dr Zakhura completed the Train the Trainer MDR-TB course through the WHO/USAID as well as completed the Training of MDR-TB course at the WHO in Latvia (2006). He completed his internship (1992-1993) and became a GP at the Department of Health, JS Moroka Hospital and Welkom DOH MDR TB Units until 2003. Presently, Dr Zakhura is Provincial Clinical Manager of XDR and MDR TB. He has remained a well-known and respected Doctor at the Department of Health, JS Moroka Hospital and Welkom DOH MDR TB Units.

Due to his immense experience with MDR-TB, Dr Zakhura is going to head up the studies at the new Welkom Kopanong DoH MDR-TB Treatment Unit/The Aurum Institute Welkom MDR-TB CRC. For the collaboration, Dr Zakhura and the CRC will strive to implement research that meets national and global priorities. The site will soon be initiating their first MDR-TB trial.
